Beginning Knitting: Just the Basics (101)

About This Class

Just the Basics (101) is a two-session class that will teach you the knit and purl stitches...all while creating a scarf!

Experience Required

None

Techniques Learned

Cast-on, knit, purl.

Materials Required

All materials must be purchased from Haus of Yarn. US8 24" circular needle; US8 double-point needles; tapestry needle, T-pins, 200 yards worsted weight yarn in a light, solid color.

Cost

$40 for two one-and-a-half-hour sessions with Alison.

Beginning Knitting: Beyond the Basics (102)

About This Class

Beyond the Basics (102) is a three-session class during which you'll expand on your knowledge of the knit and purl stitches and learn how to cast on, bind off, yarn over, I-cord and seam as you make a groovy lil' adjustable hat.

Experience Required

Prior knowledge of the knit and purl stitches.

Techniques Learned

Introduction to gauge, increases, decreases, finishing techniques, correcting common mistakes.

Materials Required

All materials must be purchased from Haus of Yarn. US8 24" circular needle; US8 double-point needles; tapestry needle, T-pins, 200 yards worsted weight yarn in a light, solid color.

Pattern, needles, and yarn of your choice. Suggested projects include Wonderful Wallaby, Baby J Cardigan, and Garter Cardi.

Fearless Finishing

About This Class

Learn the various methods of seaming, Kitchener stitch, picking up stitches and weaving in ends.

Experience Required

Basic knitting (cast on, knit, purl)

Techniques Learned

Various ways of seaming, Kitchener stitch, picking up stitches and weaving in ends.

Homework Required

Arrive to class with the following:

Stockinette swatches (make three total):

  • • Cast on 20 stitches and work in stockinette approximately 3 or 4 inches. Bind off.
    • Cast on 20 stitches and work in stockinette stitch for 2 inches. Bind off.
    • Cast on 10 stitches and work in stockinette stitch for 3 inches. Bind off.

Garter swatch (make one) – cast on 20 stitches and knit approximately 3 or 4 inches. Bind off.

1x1 Ribbing swatch (make one) – cast on 20 stitches and knit approximately 1.5 to 2 inches (k1p1). Bind off.

2x2 Ribbing swatch (make one) – cast on 22 stitches and knit approximately 1.5 to 2 inches (k2p2). Bind off.

3-needle bind off (make two) – cast on 20 stitches and work in stockinette for approximately 1.5 inches to 2 inches. Leave stitches on the needles.

Fixing Mistakes

About This Class

Let's face it: we ALL make mistakes when we knit. We drop a stitch or forget a yarnover and don't see it until the next row...and sometimes we're not quiiiite sure how to fix it! If this sounds a little too familiar to you, you need to take this class!

Experience Required

Basic knitting (cast on, knit, purl)

Techniques Learned

Fixing a dropped stitch in garter, stockinette (on the knit and purl side), and how to correct mistakes at the beginning and end of a row. You will also learn how to fix missed yarnovers and missed decreases

Homework Required

Arrive to class with the following:

Three completed 4" x 4" swatches knit in a smooth, light-colored, worsted-weight yarn.

  • • Swatch 1: garter, do not bind off, leave on a needle. Leave yarn attached!
  • • Swatch 2 & 3: stockinette, do not bind off, leave on needle. Leave yarn attached!

Kendall recommends that swatches be worked on circular needles.

About This Class

In this class, you'll be introduced to how to tension your yarn, the chain stitch, the single crochet stitch, double crochet, half double crochet, and triple crochet stitches.

Doodle Cowl with Leah

About This Class

Catch the Doodle Bug! You'll make this cowl, pattern is worked in the round, beginning with a ribbed bottom edge, followed by stranded colorwork, and finishing in ribbing along the top edge.

Arrive at class with 1" of the "lower ribbing" completed. Arrive at class ready to change to larger needle.
